AEO vs SEO: what actually changes when buyers ask AI.

By the Truscaling team

For twenty years, being found online meant one thing: show up on the results page when someone searches. That work has a name, search engine optimization, and it still matters. But a growing share of buyers now skip the results page entirely. They ask an assistant a question, the assistant answers with a few names, and the decision starts from that shortlist.

That shift created a second discipline with its own name, and if you sell something expensive, it is worth understanding what actually changed and what did not.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making a business one of the names an AI assistant gives when a buyer asks who to hire. Search engine optimization (SEO) is the work of earning positions on a results page a person scans. The first produces an answer. The second produces a list.

What SEO does

SEO earns you a position. Someone types a query, a page of results appears, and your business is somewhere on it. The person scans, compares, clicks a few links, and forms their own shortlist. Your job is to be present, to look credible, and to give them a page worth landing on.

The mechanics are well understood, and the monthly system we run is built from them: pages that deserve to rank, structure a crawler can parse, local signals that place you on the map, and consistency everywhere your business is mentioned. It compounds slowly and keeps paying after the work stops. It is the closest thing to owning your acquisition channel instead of renting it.

What AEO does

AEO earns you a mention inside the answer itself. When someone asks an assistant who to hire, the assistant does not hand back a page of blue links. It names a few businesses and says why. There is no position eleven. Either you are one of the names, or the conversation happens without you, and nothing in your analytics will show you it happened.

Assistants name businesses they can find, verify, and cross reference. In practice that means consistent details everywhere they look, real reviews, pages that answer real questions in plain language, structured data a machine can parse, and mentions in the sources the assistant actually reads. None of that can be faked quickly, which is precisely why it works.

Where they overlap

Almost everywhere, and this is the part most of the industry gets wrong. The foundations are shared: clean pages with one clear subject each, consistent name and details across the web, real reviews, structured data, and content that answers the questions buyers actually ask. Do that work well and both the results page and the answer improve together.

The differences sit at the edges. SEO cares about positions and clicks. AEO cares about being quotable and verifiable, because an assistant assembles its answer from sources it trusts. A page that states plainly what you do, for whom, at what standard, gives an assistant something it can lift. A page of vague marketing copy gives it nothing.

You may also hear GEO

Some people say answer engine optimization, some say generative engine optimization. Different acronym, same discipline: the work of being named by the engines that generate answers. Do not let anyone sell you both as separate line items.

What to actually do

Run one test today: open an assistant and ask it what your best client would ask. Who is the best at what you do, in your city. Read the answer. Either you are in it or you are not, and now you know which.

Then treat the two disciplines as one engagement. The shared foundations get built once, the results page and the answers both improve, and the tracking runs on both: positions on one side, and a monthly record of who the assistants name on the other. One caution that never changes: nobody controls what an assistant says, and anyone promising you a guaranteed spot in its answers is selling something they do not own.
